Approximately fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Cars, building surfaces and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were notified late on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been drawn in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Police then found numerous other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation prohibiting the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Officials say initial examinations show the fluid was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no lead as to its source; officials are currently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were attempting "to solve the case" and have appealed to the community for tips.
An important political figure stated the incident left him stunned and had to be solved rapidly.
"This act affects the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the death of nine victims by a assailant targeting people of migrant background in 2020.
